Export alt text in bulk to Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and BigCommerce

Drop the images from your optimized ZIP, or its alt-text list: each image's alt text and product are read for you. Check them, pick your platform and download its import file. In your browser, with no app or account: nothing is uploaded.

  • Four platforms and JSON
  • Each platform's own format
  • Nothing uploaded
Your images and alt texts
Your platform

Each file name is added to this address. Shopify and BigCommerce download images from it; WooCommerce and Magento can use file names instead.

  1. Put the images online first, at the base URL: your own server or CDN, or Content › Files in your Shopify admin.
  2. In Products › Import, choose this file and leave “Overwrite products with matching handles” unticked.
  3. New products are created as drafts, with their images and alt text: complete them (price, description) before publishing.

Products whose URL handle already exists are skipped, so nothing in your store changes. Changing existing products means overwriting them, which Shopify warns can delete variants: edit their alt text on the product page instead.

Shopify downloads each image and keeps its own copy, even of images in your Files.

Products and alt texts

Each image needs the product it belongs to. Change a product once and its other images follow.

Built in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

    One list, every platform

Each file follows its platform's documented import format, with only the columns it needs.

    • Shopify

A product CSV with each image's URL, position and alt text, for new products created as drafts.

    • WooCommerce

A CSV linking images to products by SKU. The alt text comes from the files themselves, read by WordPress 7.0 and later.

    • Magento and BigCommerce

Magento's image roles with their labels, BigCommerce's image rows with their descriptions: on both, that's the alt text.

    • JSON

Every product with its images and alt text, for a developer or a script using your platform's API.

Where the alt text comes from

Images optimized with our tool carry their alt text and product name inside the file, and the ZIP lists them in alt-text.csv. Drop either one here and the table fills itself in.

Other images work too: type their alt text in the table. Nothing leaves your browser.

Imports that don't break your catalog

Each file holds only the columns its import needs, and each platform's guide says how to import it safely: on Shopify, new products are created without touching existing ones; on WooCommerce and Magento, only images change.

Imports can still surprise: export a backup of your products first, and try the file on one product.

How do I bulk edit image alt text in Shopify without an app?

Shopify's CSV import sets alt text when it creates products, and this tool makes that file. For existing products, Shopify's import has to overwrite them, and its documentation warns this can delete variants when option columns are missing. Edit their alt text on the product page instead, copying it from the alt-text list in your ZIP.

Which Shopify CSV column holds image alt text?

“Image alt text”, next to “Product image URL” and “Image position”, with one row per image. Shopify accepts up to 512 characters and recommends 125 or fewer.

Can WooCommerce's CSV importer import alt text?

No: WooCommerce says its core importer can't add or edit image alt text. Since WordPress 7.0, though, WordPress reads the alt text stored in an image file when you upload it to the Media Library. Upload the optimized images there first, then link them to products with this CSV.

Where does Magento store image alt text?

In the image labels: base_image_label, small_image_label, thumbnail_image_label and additional_image_labels in the import file. Magento splits them on its multiple value separator, so this file uses | and the guide says where to set it.

How do I add alt text to BigCommerce product images in bulk?

In BigCommerce's import, each image is a row under its product, and its Image Description is the alt text. This file adds the images to products matched by their ID.

Will importing the file erase my product data?

The files hold only image columns, plus a name and a draft status for new Shopify products. Imports still behave differently on each platform: export a backup of your products first, and test the file on one product.

Does this tool write the alt text?

No: it exports the alt text you wrote, or that our optimizer stored in your images. Good alt text says what the image shows, in about 125 characters.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Images and lists are read by your browser, and the import file is built on your device.
