Shopify product page image audit

Paste the address of a Shopify product page. Every product image is checked: alt text, file name, size, hidden data such as GPS location, AI labels, and how much lighter the original could be. Your browser reads the store's public product data itself: nothing goes through our servers.

  • Alt text and file names
  • Hidden data and AI labels
  • Nothing goes through our servers

Any public product page of a Shopify store. Your browser reads its product data and images directly.

  • Alt text
  • File names
  • GPS and camera
  • AI labels
  • Compression
  • Size and framing

Read and checked in your browser: nothing goes through our servers.

Only labels written in files reveal AI: a missing label doesn't mean an image isn't AI-generated. Compression figures are for the original upload, at our Balanced level.

    What the audit checks

Each product image, from the original file the store uploaded.

    • Alt text

Missing, generic, just the product's name, repeated or too long: the alt text Shopify gives search engines and screen readers.

    • File names

IMG_4032.jpg says nothing, pink-flip-flop-top.jpg does. Shopify keeps the name you uploaded in the image's address.

    • Hidden data

GPS location, camera model and serial number left in the original file, which anyone can download from Shopify's CDN.

    • AI labels

The IPTC “AI-generated” label, Content Credentials (C2PA) and traces AI tools leave, such as Stable Diffusion's settings.

    • Compression

How much lighter the original upload could be, re-encoded at our Balanced level, in your browser.

    • Size and framing

Google Merchant Center's sizes, and the visual search checks: sharpness, background, framing, contrast.

From the store to your report, on your device

Shopify lets any website read a product's public data and images. The audit asks for them from your browser, without cookies, and checks them there.

    1. 01

      The store's product data

The product's public data and each original image, read from the store and Shopify's CDN.

    2. 02

      Checked in your browser

Each image is inspected and recompressed on your device, by the same engine as our optimizer. Our servers never see it.

    3. 03

      A report for each image

Problems first: alt text, file names, private data, AI labels, and how much lighter the original could be.

    What it can't tell

Only labels written in files show AI: no tool can reliably tell an AI image from its pixels, and invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID can't be read. A missing label doesn't mean an image isn't AI-generated.

Shopify resizes and converts images for visitors, so the compression figure is about the original upload, which Google Images and some themes still use. Images outside the product's media, and stores that are password-protected or block automated access, can't be checked.

How to audit a Shopify product page's images

    1. 01

      Copy the page's address

Any public product page: on your store or another Shopify store.

    2. 02

      Run the audit

The product's images are read and checked one by one, problems first.

    3. 03

      Fix what fails

Write the missing alt text in Shopify, rename and re-upload generic files, remove GPS location.

    4. 04

      Optimize before uploading

Our optimizer renames, cleans and compresses new photos before they reach your store.

    Questions, answered

The short version: it's free, your photos stay on your device, and a JPEG stays a JPEG.

How do I add alt text to Shopify product images?

In your Shopify admin, open the product, click an image and write its alt text in the field next to it. Describe what that photo shows, such as the angle, a detail or the color, not just the product's name. Shopify accepts up to 512 characters; 125 or fewer reads best.

Can I rename an image that's already on Shopify?

Not from the admin: Shopify keeps the name of the file you uploaded. Rename the file on your computer, upload it again and delete the old image. Our optimizer names files after the product for you.

Why is GPS location in a product photo a problem?

Phone photos record where they were taken. Shopify keeps the original file on its CDN, where anyone can download it, so the location of your home or workshop can travel with your product photos. Remove it before uploading.

Can the audit tell whether an image was made with AI?

Only when the file says so: the IPTC “AI-generated” label, Content Credentials (C2PA) or traces left by AI tools. No browser tool can reliably tell an AI image from its pixels, and invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID can't be read.

Doesn't Shopify compress my images already?

Shopify serves resized and converted copies to visitors, but keeps your original upload as it is. Google Images, some themes and some apps still use that original, so a lighter, clean original is worth it.

Does it work on any Shopify store?

On the public product pages of most stores. It can't read password-protected stores, and some stores block automated access: the audit then says the store refused.

Is anything sent to your servers?

No. Your browser reads the store's public product data and images directly, without cookies, and checks them on your device. We don't see the address you enter.

    Why only Shopify?

Shopify lets any website read a product's public data and images from the browser. Other platforms don't, so auditing them would mean fetching their pages through our servers.
